Since I was Satan, Leo, of course, held me responsible for it all—the loss of his dear pet, Lupa, and the death of his loved one, Cerberus.

But all this Szlyckian squalor takes us away from the events that surrounded the emergence of Kassler's splendid new molecular configuration, however unaware of it Kassler may have been as he and Lupa crossed the threshold of Dante's Inferno.

CHAPTER 3

Immediately upon entering, Lupa and Kassler were deluged with the intense driving sound of rock music. It blared throughout the huge, carpeted arena where hundreds of nude men and women were copulating on tiers that extended around and downward in a spiral—a coiled serpent composed of writhing fornicators.

Close to them, red, blue, and green lights flashed from blinding strobes. The beams flicked like reptiles' tongues stabbing at elusive insects, and reflected off mirrored globes that rotated from the ceiling, giant mechanical eyes in the midst of the vast steaming cavern.

Kassler stood dumbstruck, gazing vacantly into the bright yellow mist which hung over the heated pool at the far end of the tier. For several minutes he stared blankly into the distance at the glistening naked figures cavorting in the water, and then, mechanically, he found himself undressing and putting his clothes in a small locker against the wall where he had come in.

When Lupa saw Kassler disrobe, she did the same and hung her clothes beside his. Then she stood rigidly, facing him, staring uncomfortably down at her own nakedness and across at his, frozen into silence by a force that neither she nor Kassler could understand.

"You've got a nice body, Sy," Lupa finally broke the barrier, her words barely audible over the music.

Kassler remained in his trance, his heart filled with no simple emotion—not lust for the hordes of sensuous naked women, not repulsion at the erotic antics occurring absolutely everywhere, not even surprise at the absence of his own sexual feelings in the midst of such extreme sensuality. He had expected abundant and diverse sexual activity and was not disturbed to encounter it. What Kassler had not prepared himself for were strangers loving strangers.

What was worse, they were having such a good time doing it. Kassler was paralyzed by the overwhelming enthusiasm for insignificant intimacy.

"Aren't you going to say anything?" Lupa asked.

Kassler stared at Lupa. His eyes traveled down the gentle slope of her shoulders to where her breasts hung like ripe pears, high and full on her chest, tiny nipples set off by small dark circles. He followed the sweeping roundness of the bottoms of her breasts, where they settled against her ribs, to her tummy, which slowly rippled with her breathing, down, finally, to the curly blond hair which crowned the top of her slender bronze-skinned legs.

"I think that you're very beautiful," Kassler said numbly.

"That's a very nice thing to say."

"It's true," Kassler responded, but it was clear to Lupa that something strange was happening to her escort.

Before she had a chance to inquire further, a cold shrill voice greeted them.

"Hello, hello.
